In this paper, various characteristics of a newly developed plug-in hybrid electric boat system such as fuel cost and CO2 emission were described. It is important to attempt electrifying ship from the viewpoint of the global environmental protection and low/no carbon society. Battery-driven propulsion system has been developed but not been applied to a large scale ship because the energy density of the current battery is limited. Therefore, we have developed a plug-in hybrid boat using lithium-ion battery which can be operated by both motor and internal combustion engine, and named it as PHEB. It is proven that a plug-in hybrid electric boat has both high reliability which is a feature of internal combustion engine boat and environmental enhancement such as quietness and low running cost which is a feature of electric motor boat by actual test cruise using a trial remodeled PHEB.
