This paper introduces technical requirement for the drives in electric vehicles (EV) and their main technical solutions currently, gives characteristics of switched reluctance drives (SRD) for electric vehicles and successful application examples both here and abroad, and submits several potential special advantages of SRD for electric vehicles. Main advantages of SRD for electric vehicles include simple and robust structure as well as lower cost, especially for high speed, reliable power circuit, good dynamic response and quick regulation of rotating speed and torque, large rotating speed range and broader high-efficiency region, and using no rare earth materials, etc. Usually noise and slow-speed torque ripple are considered as the main shortages of SRD, but those shortages can be coped with technical improvement to meet requirement of all electric vehicles completely. Several potential special advantages for electric vehicles of SRD are submitted, including the singlephase motor with the simplest structure, simply and economical power circuit, six-phase motor with large starting torque and small ripple, etc. for developing together with the entire vehicle manufacturers and the drives manufacturers.
