This paper aims at providing a comprehensive overview on the rapidly-evolving field of battery electric vehicle (BEV) manufacturing, with particular emphasis on the joining, assembly and packaging of lithiumion battery packs. First, the battery and BEV industry landscape is discussed. Automotive battery assembly is then described. It details different physical structures of battery cells currently produced (cylindrical, solid container prismatic, and pouch type prismatic). It also details how battery cells are assembled into modules containing multiple battery cells. Examples of current industry designs for packing cells into modules are provided. Finally, joining technologies currently being used or being investigated for joining battery electrodes and battery cells are discussed. It discusses the concepts, advantages and disadvantages of ultrasonic welding, resistance spot welding, laser welding, mechanical fastening, as related to battery manufacturing.
