The demand for vehicles with low running costs and high environmental sustainability has continued to grow over recent years. In future, environmental sustainability will play an even more important part. One way of meeting future needs in this context lies in a broad commitment to electric vehicles. In contrast to conventional vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, the electric vehicle comes with the disadvantage of its energy-storage system having a comparatively low energy density (energy per mass of battery compared with fuel tank). This drawback affects system operation in a number of different ways and degrees. Added to this is the matter of recharging the battery which currently remains a fairly time-consuming process. This paper looks at those components of electrically driven vehicles that need to be optimized or replaced with ones providing greater efficiency under different environmental conditions. It also focuses on energy management in electric vehicles. In spite of optimization, the substantial amount of energy that will continue to be consumed in future by various loads, such as air-conditioning, heating and ventilation, necessitates a system of energy management that offers a high level of efficiency. This system of energy management is required to guarantee a defined traveling range at all times.
