This study evaluated the ride quality of SUVs (Sport-Utility Vehicles) using an objective and repeatable bench testing system and method. The ride quality and comfort rank were determined via road and bench tests under many conditions using the OVTV (Overall Vibration Total Value) and SEAT (Seat-Effective Amplitude Transmissibility) values. According to the OVTV, the comfort rankings of three SUVs were equivalent for the road and bench tests (C_car > B_car > A_car), even though this study applied a uniform drive file to each of the three SUVs. These analytical results indicate that the road and bench tests were strongly correlated, and the OVTV increased as driving speed increased. Similarly, when using the SEAT value to evaluate ride quality on different roads and at different driving speeds, the comfort rankings of three SUVs were equivalent for the road and bench tests (C_car > B_car > A_car), indicating that a strong correlation exists between the road and bench tests. The linear relationship between the road and bench test results is given by OVTVcorrected bench = 0.9335 x OVTVbench (R2 = 0.9908). The accuracy of the bench tests was improved by the correction factor, and the mean error of the OVTVs for the road and bench tests decreased from 9.75% (original) to 0.2% (after correction). The complete procedures for ride comfort evaluation with the laboratory test system (four-poster) are presented and include a transducer installation, a bench test using target drive files, ride comfort evaluation, OVTV correction, comfort grade definition and comfort ranking. Finally, this approach provides an objective, repeatable and laboratory-controlled test system for determining vehicle ride quality.
