After many years since its first conception, the final draft of the new CEN TS 45545-2 "fire requirements for trains in Europe" is finally with us. This new normative will take over from the traditionally referred to Fire and Fume national regulations such as the French NF F 16 101, the German DIN 5510 and the BS 6853. However, with many operators in Europe already referring to this new "CEN TS 45545-2" normative, understanding the test methods and how it could effect actual polymer use is now of vital importance for EP resin manufacturers and their customers. The NF F 16 101/2 regulation is based on a Fire resistance part "I" using Glow wire and LOI as the main test methods and a Fume/toxicity part "F" using both toxicity and opacity methods. The new norm CEN TS 45545-2 will be much more centred on end application and the risk of actually harming passengers. Therefore, it will have 3 Hazard levels (HL) based on the type of transport and an R level based on the type of applications and the risk that they pose. For E&E applications the R level 23 and 24 are considered the most critical. It is estimated that around 80 - 90 % of application use will be covered if HL2 level is actually reached. For the R23 and R24 the fire resistance measurement is classed by LOI whilst toxicity and opacity measurements, much like those used in the NF F 16 101, will be used. This paper will compare results and ratings achieved using the NF F 16 101 with new results and draft ratings made in accordance to the new CEN TS 45545-2 regulation. From these results conclusions will be drawn on whether or not it will be necessary to completely change the type of products and even polymers that are today used to meet the current nation regulations.
