In order to develop a test method for qualifying advanced high strength steel sheets for the use in body in white in respect to hydrogen embrittlement, a VDA working group was formed to jointly tackle the problem. Several approaches were pursued by different OEMs and then compared to each other. The different test methods are described within this paper. The so called Cup-in-Cup test shows a combination of critical parameters that would resemble the worst case regarding manufacturing conditions. However, with this test method it is not possible to differentiate whether a delayed cracking phenomenon is due to the forming, welding or coating operation. Therefore other test methods were proposed in order to better understand the influence of deformation in contrast to welding. Furthermore these sample geometries were exposed to several corrosive media to further induce hydrogen into the material. The results obtained with these different test methods should not yet be interpreted as an approval process for the steel grades tested but as an intermediate result of the working group.
