The paper describes the new energy storage equipment for LRV's (Light Rail Vehicles), the MITRAC Energy Saver ES500 in combination with the new generation of traction converters MITRAC TC520. The delivery of the new vehicles was started in July 2009, homologation was achieved in November 2009 and today there is a growing number of vehicles in revenue service, serviced by public transportation operator RNV (Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH) in Mannheim. The on board energy storage system with double layer capacitors for railway vehicles presented in this paper was already proven to be a reliable technical solution by outstanding 4 years revenue service of an Prototype LRV. An enormous energy saving of 30% propulsion energy was measured. The very positive experience lead to an order to equip 19 LRVs with MITRAC Energy Saver - the best confirmation of successful experience the customer RNV could make. To equip Metros with MITRAC Energy Saver is leading to very similar technical results - energy savings, infrastructure benefits due to reduced power demand from the 3rd rail, as well as a rescue function, where even in case of power blackouts the Metro can continue to the journey to the next station and leave out the passengers in a safe way.
