Civil aviation is constantly under the threat posed by terrorist attacks. Checked luggage and parcels are possible channels for smuggling explosive devices, below the threshold of the detection instruments but still able to cause catastrophic damage onboard aircrafts. Supplementary layers of protection are needed to protect airplanes from in-flight onboard threats. This has been the idea behind Fly-Bag, an FP7 European project which ran from December 2008 to February 2011, involving 8 partners from 6 countries, which has successfully designed, developed and tested an innovative, entirely textile-based, air cargo luggage container with blast containment capabilities. The FLY-BAG concept, based on a flexible anti-blast multilayered textile envelope designed to resist a small to medium explosion by controlled expansion and full containment of the pressure generated by the explosion while, at the same time, preventing hard luggage fragment projectiles from striking the airframe at high speed, was presented at Dornbirn MCF 2010 along with preliminary experimental findings from material characterization tests. This presentation "closes the circle" by presenting follow-up activities: prototyping, standardization, load testing in real operative conditions on board an Airbus A319 airplane and final validation of the concept by successful full scale testing of the developed prototypes under blast conditions that would most likely cause collapse of an aircraft.
