This paper presents a new thermal control strategy to increase the lifetime of power semiconductors within a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) without decreasing the output power. The proposed control strategy is able to reduce the amplitude of thermal cycles, especially at low output frequency and high current. This in turn leads to a significant increase of the lifetime of the power semiconductors. Exemplarily an induction machine (IM) is used to prove the thermal control in a real set up. By measuring the junction temperatures of the power semiconductors and a following lifetime prediction, the increase of lifetime at different control strategies is compared.
