In this paper, various constraints for an optimized voltage range for future electric (EV) and hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV) are given. The question addresses the system point of view, motivated by the necessity for standardization. On the one hand, the standards are the basis but each component has its own growth rate of e.g. volume or insulation thickness with the voltage level. Therefore a detailed analysis of each component's voltage dependency as a function of the traction topology is performed and all necessary mechanisms are listed. This not only includes the active parts such as battery, machine and inverter but also passive components can be included, e.g. connectors and fuses. Finally, based on the single component's analysis, design constraints for future vehicles and vehicle components are presented to achieve the overall optimum design.
