The results presented in this paper clearly show that duplex contributes with both structural efficiency to seismic design of storage tanks, and cost efficiency by utilizing its beneficial properties compared to both austenitic stainless steel and coated carbon steel. The enhanced strength of duplex grades can further be utilized in the bottom courses of large storage tanks when seismic responses are considered, and structural design is not unfavorably restricted by stiffness or stability requirements (e.g. as minimum allowed shell thickness for the upper shell courses). The thinner gauges provided by duplex grades results in lower material costs, less welding and easier handling - improving manufacturability, although the welding costs for duplex grades per unit of length is higher. The great combination of both high wear and high corrosion resistance improves durability, which potentially prolongs service life and minimizing the need for costly maintenance and repair throughout the life cycle. All together, the potential for duplex grades in storage tanks is to combine safe design with more efficient use of resources; whether it is raw material, financing, time consumption or environmental impact.
