Powder forged (P/F) connecting rods have been used for automotive applications with more than 500 million being produced since 1986. But the trend towards higher fatigue strength while maintaining good machinability provides a new challenge. Traditionally P/F connecting rods have been made from mixed elemental metallic powders such as Fe and Cu along with graphite. Through the use of prealloyed Cu iron powder, improved microstructures result without the need for traditional quench and temper processing, leading to higher strengths than traditional elemental addition compositions without adversely affecting the machinability. This presentation compares the properties of the various alloying routes with the related advantages when applied to connecting rods
