The application of plastic recyclates is growing steadily as a proportion of the total plastic application within automobile production. Reasons for this are saving of resources, environmentally conscious, sustainable economic activity, cost reduction and waste management legislation. Concerning the saving of resources through the use of recycled materials there has been a growing knowledge especially in the past few years. Studies on basis of processed plastics coming from housings of electronic devices show even a higher energy saving of more than 80%. Especially nowadays, in times of increased competition, it is important for car manufacturers to apply an environmentally and sustainable production strategy in order to support the marketing activities of their products. The issue of recyclate application is for many car manufacturers part of their environmental strategy. For the material purchasing department cost reductions play a significant role in times of high commodity prices. For this reason nearly every car manufacturer puts more emphasis on this subject compared with a few years ago. For car manufacturers plastics represent a high quality commodity. The economic importance of the plastics for the automobile manufacturer will continue to grow because of its increasing use in their vehicles. Against this background it plays an important role that plastic recyclates are priced at about 15% - 30% less compared with virgin materials of the same types. Another advantage is the weak bond of these recyclate materials to the current oil prices, compared with plastic virgin materials. Recyclate prices reflect the status of renewable raw materials rather than the status of virgin plastics. In almost all industrialized countries exists a legislation, which regulates dealing with waste in an environmentally friendly way. In the EU member states EU directives try to minimize the disposal of waste by requiring the development of substance and material cycles, e.g. EU ELV Directive 2000/53/EC, German Recycling and Waste Management Act. The scope of applications for recyclates lies in a relatively large component spectrum in almost all areas of the vehicle. The automotive industry prefers to use recyclates in applications where easily manageable injection processes based on standard plastics dominate. The availability of in-demand recyclates is well established in markets like Germany. Worldwide the availability will increase in industrialised countries where a ban on landfill for organic waste is in force. The growing experience with the recyclates, their properties and their processing, will lead to wider and more challenging applications in the automotive industry. These developments are based on the necessary and desired cost savings and the quest for sustainable economics of the automobile manufacturers. Under certain conditions an increase of recyclate applications will happen, strongly within the next 5-10 years.
