Optimizing the control strategy of a vehicle has the benefit of decreasing the fuel consumption of the vehicle. In this paper, deterministic dynamic programming was used to develop tie optimal control strategy for a hydraulic hybrid vehicle that can operate in a parallel, series or power-splitt configuration by locking the hydraulic units, closing valves to prevent leakage, and declutching the nojne. This was done for both ideal and non-ideal hydraulic pump/motors by using manufacturer efficiency data. The results showed different operating behavior between the ideal and nonideal cases, but neither could be implemented on a physical system due to the rapid engine and mode switching. To correct tils obstacle, a penalty was added to the objective function each time the engine turned on/off or the vehicle switched operaing modes. This resulted in a feasible control law that could be implemented on a vehicle. More work must be done before implementation. First, since dynamic programming assumes the future is known exactly, the results cannot be directly applied, and the results must be analyzed to develop a rulebased strategy. Second, the vehicle has a mid-level controller that must be included in this model. The midlevel control takes accumulator power as an input, and outputs the operating parameters for the engine and hydraulic units. The optimization problem then becomes to find the accumulator power to minimize losses in the system. This has been completed for the HMT mode, but further work is needed to further implement it with the Parallel, T-Only and S-Only modes.
