This paper presents an account of the state-of-the-art on complexity in interactive systems, and knowledge elicited from expert users to better identify how they perceive complexity. A number of knowledge elicitation sessions provided a large set of concepts that were categorized using a paradigm based on a previous framework developed for human-centered design of life-critical systems. Results are commented and synthesized in order to produce an overall abstraction of the novelty complexity concept. This exercise provides a good example of the power of both the group elicitation method and the selected structuring framework, as well as the limitations that may be overcome by taking into account appropriate expertise, assumptions and models. This is where the connection between userperceived complexity and cognitive stability is extremely useful and thoughtful by considering action as the main driving factor by the designers of interactive systems. The paper concludes in discussing constraints of human-centered design in real-world setups and reasons to take into account complexity and maturity concepts seriously.
