To enable a CO2 separation unit in a closed loop environmental control system the adsorption process was selected due to its low pressure drop and relatively easy integration into an aircraft. Several state of the art adsorbents were examined by pure component isotherms. A functionalized aerogel and zeolite 13X showed the highest adsorption capacities at 250 Pa, making them most suitable for an application in a CO2 separation unit. The functionalized aerogel with its high adsorption capacity for CO2 and its ability to adsorb ethanol seems to be a promising adsorbent for inclusion in closed loop environmental control systems. The zeolite 13X seems also applicable as an adsorbent in aircraft CO2 removal systems with restrictions in overall energy consumption due to its need for additional drying beds. Overall, the closed loop environmental control system offers a promising opportunity to reduce the energy demand for the future aircraft.
