Within software engineering, different object-oriented reuse concepts exist on various levels of abstraction like frameworks, inheritance and patterns. With the introduction of objectoriented modeling languages (e.g. UML and SysML) into the modeling of hardware systems, the question rises, how far reuse concepts from software engineering can be applied to this domain as well. In this paper, we try to establish a basic understanding of how reuse can be applied in objectoriented hardware system models. First, we start with important definitions, then summarize the current state of the art from the existing literature and the experience gained at our institute by using the object-oriented modeling tool. Second, we assess, how far reuse concepts from software engineering are applicable to hardware systems design. Third, we try to verify the applicability of exemplary reuse concepts in two spacecraft design case studies. Finally, conclusions for the future direction of research are drawn.
