Since the 90s, General Motors decided to design 'in house' all Powertrain Controllers. This strategy, unique among all the other OEMs, was first applied to gasoline and transmission controllers, and is now in production with the second generation which enlarged the family to hybrids and to the first Diesel EMS named D1. Third generation of controllers is already under design. Thanks to the in-house strategy General Motors becomes fully responsible for the EMS system from the architecture definition to the system calibration going through hw specification, microprocessor definition, ASIC design, algorithm design, software coding and validation steps. The direct benefits of the in-house approach are the protection of strategic IP and the increased product quality by extensive reuse of proven solutions. Moreover the common and standardized EMS architecture is the enabler of a 'component level competition' with consequent reduction of supplier dependence. But the biggest advantage resides in the possibility of contemporary synergic development of the engine and the EMS, exploiting through simulations the best possible integration of the EMS with engine design. The D1 system is a state of the art Euro 5 EMS, including closed-loop combustion control and advanced CO2 containment techniques, which integrates as well some specific and unique features. For the first time in a Diesel EMS, glow plugs controller has been eliminated integrating glow plug drivers in the Engine Controller thanks to the design of a new high current capable connection system and a thermally optimized ECM. In addition a fully flexible injection driver, based on General Motors proprietary Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) has been integrated in the D1 ECM. This ASIC has been designed to manage all Common Rail Diesel solenoid injector technologies available in the market giving General Motors the freedom to choose the 'best in the market' component. D1 successful introduction on the European market and the already mentioned successors will give GM a primary role to achieve a competitive advantage through better functionalities at a lower cost.
