There is a continuous progress in onboard system design and technology for naval and airborne transport vehicles which results quite often in an increasing cabling effort and system complexity. Any significant growth in wiring effort causes an increased system weight and higher construction as well as maintenance costs. Therefore, a self-organizing wireless sensor network and data transmission technique is proposed in this paper which reduces system weight and costs. Several applications with different system requirements, like data rate, energy efficiency, radio access scheme and communication link reliability can be integrated into the on-board sensor network. To fulfill all these different requirements, the system is designed in an entirely self-organizing way to be highly flexible and adaptive to changing system conditions.
