This paper deals with the analysis of the curving performance of modern multi-articulated tramcars. When dealing with the sharp curves typical of urban networks, the contact forces exchanged at wheel-rail interface are responsible for most of the crucial problems related to tramcar operation, such as track degradation and squeal noise. The behaviour of a tramcar with conventional rigid bogie frames is compared to that of a vehicle equipped with bogie active-steering system, to show how the contact forces can be drastically reduced if the wheelset yaw angle with respect to the track approaches zero. The proposed active-steering system is based on an articulated bogie frame and yaw actuators to control the relative rotation between the front and the rear axles. The benefits of the actively steered tramcar over the traditional one are pointed out and the feasibility of the proposed control system is investigated.
