The tyres, depending on technology and operating condition, account for 20 % to 30 % of the energy consumption of vehicles. With the new EU regulations on fuel efficiency regarding tyres (in terms of rolling resistance limit values and classification) the potential of saving energy is not yet fully exploited; modern low-rolling resistance tyres are only able to deploy their maximum energy savings, if the interaction of tyre and vehicle is optimized with regard to the total energy balance. Also actual fuel consumption measurements do not always match common driving cycles (e.g. NEDC - New European Driving Cycle) with adequate accuracy. Supported by the method Rolling Resistance plus the tyres are characterized and described by mathematical modelling regarding their energy consumption under various operating conditions. These models provide a basis for estimating the amount of energy (fuel) consumed by a vehicle combined with a certain tyre under real driving conditions and open the avenue for energy relevant optimization of the tyre-vehicle interaction already in early stages of the development process.
