The thermal and mechanical tyre model (TameTire) developed by Michelin represents a new breakthrough in tyre modeling to simulate handling. IPG has integrated TameTire into its leading-edge CarMaker vehicle dynamics simulation platform. This article looks at the advantages which TameTire provides over state-of-the-art mathematical models for handling simulation, as well as its integration into IPG CarMaker. This new tyre model enables a significantly wider range of track tests to be realistically modelled and a better reconstruction of the test conditions. The thermo-mechanical tyre model brings more realism to modelling the transient behaviour of the tyres and opens up prospects for new applications. The tyre can be incorporated into the parameter space of vehicle optimization as a tuning element. This enables the definition of tyre parameters for the development of a desired (target) vehicle function. The robustness of the setup could also be proved by a certain tyre property scope. Chassis setups can also be tuned by the distribution of the tyre temperature. Last but not least, TameTire is also suitable for TPMS systems. The study described in this article was subsequently extended specifically for longitudinal and lateral dynamic transient handling with an ABS/ESP control system on a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test rig. TameTire will be available on the market in spring 2010 both as a version that is fully integrated into the CarMaker vehicle dynamics simulation platform and as a stand-alone model. IPG will market the TameTire model worldwide and supports Michelin in the continuing development of the model.
