Sheer Driving Pleasure through Efficient Dynamics' - once again BMW highlighted this credo by developing a high-performance hybrid car based on the platform of the X6. In 2008, the BMW Group launched the new BMW X6 XDrive. In line with the BMW Efficient Dynamics Strategy, the BMW Group developed a full hybrid powertrain for the X6 to complement the highly efficient gasoline and diesel powertrains. The full hybrid powertrain was chartered to fulfill strategic as well as technical targets. In this paper the author discusses the technical targets, the implementation, and the achieved results. Simultaneous to the product development of the hybrid powertrain the BMW group developed and implemented new hybrid specific standards, methods, and guidelines for the entire process chain. The product characteristics were determined in large part by software functions, to control the complex interactions of the combustion engine, electric motors and transmission. Therefore software development comprised the lion share of the total product development effort. Accentuating the BMW 'Sheer Driving Pleasure' was the goal behind the selection of the operating strategies in both the electrical and conventional drive modes. Despite the additional weight of the hybrid components the BMW typical dynamics were maintained and even improved. The CO2 emissions were significantly reduced at the same time. Even though common transmission hardware and hybrid powertrain software with Daimler and GM were integrated in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 a very BMW specific product characteristic was achieved. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 reigns supreme among sporty full hybrid luxury vehicles. It is the BMW of hybrid electric vehicles and an innovative example of the implementation of the BMW Efficient Dynamics strategy.
