Cabin air filters in cars clean the incoming external air by removing particles and noxious gases by filtration and adsorption, predominantly onto activated carbon. The height of the activated carbon layer is especially small in cabin air filtration. As test substances for adsorptive filters in cabin air filtration, toluene and n-butane are prescribed in several engineering standards, e.g., ISO TS 11155-2 (International Organisation for Standardisation - Technical Specification)) or the German industry standard, DIN 71460, part 2. n-butane and toluene are determined as the main test substances, at volumetric contests of 80 ppm and volumetric flow rates between 100 m3/h and 600 m3/h at 23 deg C and 50 % relative humidity. In the study presented, the differences in binary adsorption between toluene or n-butane and water vapour are investigated with emphasis on adsorption equilibrium and kinetics within a broader range of conditions, i.e. at temperatures between 15 deg C and 33 deg C, and relative humidity varying between 0 % and 90 %. The range of input concentrations is from 2 ppmv up to 80 ppmv. In the case of n-butane, the hydrocarbon is not competing with the water vapour for adsorption sites, but water vapour is the dominant adsorptive. In contrast, the adsorption of toluene and water vapour is a sort of co-adsorption. Increasing amounts of water vapour reduce toluene adsorption capacity but, inversely, increasing amounts also reduce the water capacity even at 90 % relative humidity. The theoretical description of equilibrium for both hydrocarbons as single component in a mixture with water vapour was successfully carried out with the Dubinin-Raduskevich-isotherm equation.
