The authors develop a day-to-day route choice control method that is based on model predictive control (MPC). For the route choice they assume that drivers base their decision on the experienced travel times. These travel times can be influenced via existing control measures, e.g. outflow limits or variable speed limits. This allows us to indirectly influence the route choice of the drivers. In previous work they have developed a route choice control method for networks with simple, non-overlapping routes, single destinations, and constant or piecewise constant flows. In this paper they extend this method to networks with overlapping routes and with restricted link inflow capacities. They illustrate the control approach with a case study for a simple network with four routes. This paper is organized as follows. The control problem is formulated in section 2. Next, the route choice model is formulated in section 3, in particular the extensions for road capacities and overlapping routes. Section 4 presents the model-based control approach. In section 5 the proposed control approach is illustrated with an example. Section 6 concludes the paper.
