The light source used in Headlamp is Halogen, followed by HID. Now because of the compact size and energy-saving of White LED, it is being studied in application of Headlamp not only on the aspect of optic but also on chromaticity. The spectral reflective performance of material and the SPD of light source determine the final color appearance of sample. The spectra of white LED is different from the conventional light sources and the color appearance of traffic sign under White LED will change. White LEDs application is being studied now. Because of the spectrum distribution of white LEDs, the color appearance of traffic sign is changed when it's illuminated by LED Headlamp. This paper focuses on the theoretical analysis and visual experiment on the change of color appearance under Halogen, HID and LEDs which are used or are going to be used in Headlamp. In this paper three color samples (red, yellow, green), are selected, which meet the national standard of China for Safety Color GB 2893-2001. For blue sign Collins has found that blue was a successful color for correct naming under different conventional light sources. Even under phosphor White LEDs, it was found that the color shift met the related requirements. So in this paper we don't study the color shift of the blue sign under the tested light sources. The influence of color shift on the same sample varied with the SPDs of light source. In order to evaluate the performance of traffic sign under White LED, we think colors with chromaticity coordinates within the required gamut area are acceptable, or if the evaluated color shift under White LED is no more substantial than under Halogen or HID, it can be accepted as Headlamp. Because Halogen and HID were accepted by drivers. For yellow and green samples the colors under White LED are inside of the required gamut area. Also under White LED the ratings of color change are no more than Halogen or HID. For green and yellow sign HID results in the biggest color change, the second is LED and Halogen respectively. Color difference includes three components: brightness difference, chroma difference and hue difference. The direction of color shift is an important aspect to evaluate whether the traffic sign can be rendering without confusion. We think more percentage of hue change to long wavelength or to short wavelength means the more possibilities of confusion.
