An introduction to thermoelectric generation is followed by a brief outline of the basic principles, which govern the thermoelectric conversion of heat flow into electricity. Components of a thermoelectric generator are described together with their role. Examples of generators are presented with power outputs ranging from micro-milliwatts to kilowatts and include an early Russian examples from the 1950's to NASA's multihundred watt systems that provide on-board power to deep space missions. Improvements in generator performance due to advances in material figure- of- merit, thermoelement design and module configurations are reviewed. Current activity in thermoelectric generation is focused on waste heat recovery. Major sources of low and high temperature waste heat are identified. Efforts to develop vehicular exhaust waste heat recovery technology are reviewed and the potential of thermoelectric generation in combating global warming and reducing fuel consumption assessed. The first crucial step in transferring the improvements in thermoelectric figure-of-merit obtained in nanostructured thin films to bulk material has been achieved This development in material research holds out the best opportunity to date for obtaining substantial improvements in bulk material performance. However, other factors such as material cost, weight, availably and toxicity need to be addressed before achieving globalisation of thermoelectric generation and over a wide spectrum of applications.
