With an aim to optimize investment expenses and minimize power inputs for train traction, it is proposed to consider electrified sections of main-line railways as unified complex electro-mechanical systems that convert electric energy fed to the input of a traction substation into mechanical energy (tractive force) in traction mode and the kinetic energy of a locomotive into electric energy in the regenerative braking mode. This system comprises the equipment of a traction substation, a contact system, energy accumulators, and devices that improve the quality of the transferred energy, including stationary reactive power compensators, hauling units, etc. Advances in converter and informational equipment, automated control systems, and the operation and protection of energy objects and hauling units have enabled the development of a unified control system which provides for operation of all system elements with specified parameters, e.g. minimizing electric energy consumption for traction at the available train mass, profiles of the operation sections, and conditions of achieving tractive force. This approach will allow to control energy flows in the transportation system and develop algorithms for the energy-saving control of train motion that correspond to the general policy of the Russian OAO RZhD, which is aimed at transitioning from local information systems to a unified information system with automated control centers in all spheres of activity. With regards to design, a complex control subsystem should consist of modules. The sensors can be positioned either in structural modules (current and voltage sensors, etc.) or beyond them (temperature and speed sensors, etc.) and switched via serial communication channels. The available devices of separate control subsystems (traction substations, hauling units, etc.) can be used for system development. The existence of constant external disturbances necessitates the calculation of energy-optimal trajectories of train motion in real time. Spacetime data on the span section the electric locomotive, e.g., speed, obtained in real time with the required accuracy can be received using the GLONAS satellite system. As an example, the system of electric energy conversion in electric locomotives is simulated using circuit-theory methods. In case of an Russioan EP10 electric locomotive fed from an AC power network, this system includes a traction transformer, input 4q-S converters, dc units (filters), and self-contained voltage inverters for feeding induction traction engines.
