A novel lateral collision warning strategy is proposed to judge accurately lateral impact danger. Different numerical simulation results show that this collision-judging algorithm can effectively distinguish the safe passing, safe cut-in, and really dangerous changing-lane driving situations. In addition, the grey prediction theory is introduced to predict the vehicle relative distances for calculating the TTC beforehand. The numerical results show that this algorithm can accurately estimate the vehicle's relative distance 0.5 s ahead. This means that 0.5 s extra time can be gained in which the driver can take collision avoidance action. Hence the ideas proposed in this study have significant function improvement contributions to the active lateral collision warning system. They can also be used in the low-speed parking guidance application. The proposed algorithms can also be applied at median relative speed. The experimental test is planned for future research.
