Triphenylboron Pyridine is a copper free antifouling technology currently commercialized with most sales in Asia where AF registration is not required. Although it has been used for over 5 years, there are still some unresolved issues preventing wider use in antifouling paints. There is limited data on the toxicity and environmental fate of triphenylboron pyridine and more data is necessary to get registration under the BPD and to obtain increased acceptance by the global marine paint manufactures. It is important to insure product stability, to insure good performance and to prevent the release of benzene in the paint. This paper will present data that illustrates the decomposition under various conditions and suggests to how to limit this instability. We will also show a method to measure the presence of benzene in paint that can be used to test individual formulations.
