Vanadium has a long history of application in automotive steels and recent research has shown the potential for its extended use in a range of steels and applications. In hot and cold rolled strip steels vanadium has a number of potential benefits. In HSLA steels vanadium is an effective strengthener in hot rolled strip, and there is potential for use in cold rolled and annealed strip with high nitrogen and lower aluminium contents. In BH steels vanadium reduces recrystalization temperatures, compared with titanium and niobium, and may offer potential for reduced annealing times and temperatures in continuous annealing lines. In DP steels vanadium may offer potential to improve bending and flanging performance by strengthening the ferrite and reducing the difference in hardness with the martensite. In TRIP steels vanadium has been shown to significantly refine the grain size in the cold rolled and intercritically annealed condition. In Ultra High Strength Steels, such as austenitic TWIP and martensitic grades, vanadium offers the opportunity to reduce the propensity for hydrogen induced failure by providing a high density of sites for hydrogen trapping. Vanadium microalloyed air-cooled steels have largely replaced heat-treated steels in forgings, and offer potential for development of higher strength levels in ferrite-pearlite and bainitic microstructures, for a range of forged components used in the engine.
