This paper deals with the mechatronic design of an active suspension for a light-weight all-terrain tracked vehicle, the focus being on the development of a simplified vehicle model and the model-based design of control strategies. The vehicle model focuses on representing the vertical dynamics and the main influence the track exerts on this dynamics in a tracked vehicle. The model is the basis for a computer-aided system analysis and design of the vertical-dynamics control. The latter is based on strategies used for wheeled vehicles, but adapted to the specific features of a tracked vehicle and extended accordingly.
