This paper describes a case study of a pilot manufacturing cell using flexible feeder devices, vision systems and robots to realize a robust, flexible and fast reconfigurable assembly system for air brake connectors Only gnppers and pallets need to be manufactured, all other parts of the system are standard mechatronical modules which can easily be re-arranged for other tasks. The robustness and availability of the system is no longer depended on special manufactured feeding devices, but on software and the vision system. The system can achieve changeover-time equal the cycle time of 2 seconds, introduction of new products with less than 2 hours stop in the manufacturing cell, and total rebuild within 1 week. The effectiveness of the system is demonstrated with pilot manufacturing of a number of couplings.
