Molecular structure design using aromatic polyesters was successfully performed for the core polymer of a highly thermal resist Step-Index (SI) Polymer Optical Fiber(POF) which can be utilized for automobile and home information LAN. The polyester was prepared via interfacial polycondensation method using bisphenol A, sodium hydroxide, and iso- or tere-phthaloyl chlorides in the present of the phase transfer catalyst at around room temperature in high yields. The glass transition temperature, Tg of the obtained core polyester is estimated as 170 to 220 deg C much higher than those of not only typical SI fiber polymers, PMMA (Tg = 85 deg C), PC (Tg = 150 deg C) but also PStatactic (Tg = 100 deg C). This polyester showed neither color nor clear melting point, although the thermal decomposition temperature is more than 360 deg C. WAX pattern of the polyester showed only a fairly wide halo peak at 2rho = 18 deg of angle (approx. d = 4.8 AE) whose intensity is decreased compared to that of PC and this rinding was correlated with the fairly high light transmittance, ca. 89 to 90 % comparable for PC (87 to 91%). Further the turbidity (HAZE) of the polyester is 1.01 rather better compared to those of PMMA (1.87) and PC (1.12). Those results suggest potential applications for not only automobile but also home information LAN and interconnecttion cable materials.
