Transportation in the northern areas of Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia and Russia is challenging at any time of the year but especially in winter. Air travel allows access to even the most remote community or mine site but is extremely expensive for moving freight. Ground transportation, at one-tenth the cost of air freight, is most economical but permanent roads are expensive to construct or impossible if they cross environmentally sensitive areas. The solution has been the construction of ice roads. Ice roads are constructed on natural bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and streams after the onset of freezing occurs in the winter. Ice roads have become the standard transportation link to areas of oh and natural gas exploration, mines and remote communities in the north. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is an effective and economical method for monitoring the thickness of ice roads and ensuring the safety of those driving on the ice. Although the history of GPR for ice road thickness goes back to the 1970's, simplification of the technology in recent years has led to wide-spread use.
