Forthcoming EU5 emissions legislation in combination with efforts to decrease the overall fuel consumption and CO2 emissions has created new challenges in development of exhaust gas aftertreatment systems for passenger cars powered by diesel engines. Advanced powertrain technologies combined with innovative filter materials are key enablers to meet these requirements. Improved strategies for the operation of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) have to be developed to maximize engine and vehicle performance and to ensure durable system performance. In this paper we show how DuraTrap AT - a non-segmented ceramic filter material - was successfully applied to Ford of Europe advanced powertrain technologies. The basis for DuraTrap AT is a stabilized aluminum titanate material. The test engine used for this joint development program was a 1.6-l four cylinder stage V diesel powertrain. For the engine bench test purposes the fuel born catalyst (FBC) system was disabled and the engine was equipped with an early-stage CDPF application for DuraTrap AT.Various test sequences on an engine bench and a test vehicle delivered a broad database used to support the development of an exhaust aftertreatment system suitable to reach EU5 emissions legislation. Backpressure tests were done to obtain information on the clean and soot loaded backpressure of various filter designs. DuraTrap AT ACT was also tested in DTI test sequences to define soot mass limit for the specific engine/filter combination and to get a broad data base for the development of an advanced regeneration strategy to improve the overall system performance. To secure a safe and durable filter performance on the vehicle application long-term filter testing was performed on the engine bench. The challenging EU5 emissions requirements could be met by using advanced engine controls and regeneration strategies in combination with the introduction of DuraTrap AT.
