The performance and durability of rubber articles is strongly influenced by reinforcing fillers. This rubber reinforcement by very fine particles in the nanometer range is a result of the strong interaction with the elastomer matrix. Nature and mechanics of rubber reinforcement is still a subject of discussions. There is evidence that physical as well as chemical attachments of the molecular polymer chains to the filler surface contribute to the reinforcing effect. By the use of carbon black the degree of interaction with rubber mainly depends on primary particle size, degree of aggregation and surface energy. Nowadays the specific control of the carbon black formation by highly sophisticated processes gives the possibility to develop novel cabon black particles providing performance enhancement in tires. Carbon black with new morphology demonstated aslready improvements in rolling resistance or abrasion resistance, especially useful for truck tires. The outstanding improvement by the usage of the filler system silica and silane in passenger car tire tread compounds demonstrazed that special fillers respectively filler systems take an important part alongside polymer and network structure in the performance of tread compounds. The control of a chemical reaction between silica and silane simultaneously with the dispersion and distribution is state-of-the-art in the tire industry today. The chemical linkage between filler and polymer provides large benefits in the reduction of rolling resistance for passenger car tires. Basic researches in rubber reinforcement and process technology lead to product innovations in reinforcing filler systems. The Ecorax family, silicas with new morphology and the newly developed organosilane VP Si 363 are examples for such product innovations which significantly reduce the hysteresis of rubber compounds and therefore the rolling resistance of tires.
