Power brake systems using pneumatic power for service and parking brakes are used at most of all heavy goods vehicles. Measurement of brake forces for purposes of vehicle inspection is only sufficient, if the pneumatic pressure is also taken into account, as long as vehicles are not fully loden during inspection. The measurements at the wheel brake chambers are primarily used to evaluate the braking performance within the technical safety inspection and for service maintenance work. Normally simple, calibrated needle pressure gauges are used for measurement, which display the pressure at one wheel cylinder at a scale from 0 to 16 bar (required accuracy is 1% full scale). The limitations of this method are obvious: Only two pressures can be measured at the same time. The display is subject to inaccuracy of meter-reading. The time response can not be evaluated. The measurements can not be stored automatically. For the more precise two-point-examination, two measurements, with as far as possible apart lying brake pressure / brake force pairs have to be performed. DEKRA developed applicable solutions in cooperation with MAHA, a supplier for testing devices. For vehicles, e.g. trailers, with multiple axles in short gap, to lift the roller brake tester is a quite good method to increase the axle load of the tested axle. For single axles there is no effect by use of lifting the test bench. The second solution, which is unlike the first one applicable for nearly all vehicles is a pulldown equipment. Here, the vehicle is pulled down hydraulically above the tester. The belts can be fitted, regarding the vehicle manufacturers advises, at axles or frames. Regarding cost and time aspects, a combination of both techniques is the best solution. Reducing the limits of the existing test procedure, DEKRA and MAHA also developed a completely new intelligent pressure measurement system, that furthermore is capable to deliver proper information of the function of the truck-to-trailer interface. The whole system consists of up to 5 wireless pressure measurement devices, an interface connector for ISO11992, a receiver with USB connection to a personal computer an a mobile charging base. For the future, an off Board Diagnostic Vehicle Communication Interface for the handheld truck tester is planned as an extension.
