Mercedes-Benz is continuing its success story of diesel engines for passenger cars with the innovative 4-cylinder engine OM 651. It has the best performance of its segment in terms of output, torque, emission characteristics and fuel economy. The design and thermodynamic basic concept as well as the selected combustion chamber design with its effects on fuel consumption, emissions, driving characteristics and comfort are presented here. The fuel injection for the basic output model uses fourth generation common rail technology, and represents the worlds first application of the direct-driven piezo injector. The turbocharging takes place depending on the output level with a single- or two-stage turbocharger. Compared with the predecessor engine, the untreated emissions have been reduced to such an extent that the new 4-cylinder engine already complies with the future EU5 emissions standard right up to and including the full-size compact SUV (Sportive Utility Vessel) segment without any active de-NOxing system. The new diesel engine will be installed in different versions in numerous model series, including the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Achieving this without too many variants was one of the objectives during engine design. The measures for reducing fuel consumption, which ultimately result in lower fuel consumption in comparison with the predecessor engine, in spite of the higher output, are described in detail.
