The preliminary tests results show that 2.3 to 2.6 W of power can be generated by the combustion of diesel fuel and use of a single bismuth telluride module with unoptimized off-the- shelf heat exchangers. The atomizing, ignition, and sustained combustion of diesel fuel as part of a low pressure thermoelectric generator has been demonstrated and proved viable. The other objectives of this prototype were to provide insight into areas requiring special attention and to provide a baseline performance for comparison with future improvements. The reported data as well as observations noted during the design, construction, and operation of the thermoelectric power unit (TEPU) highlighted areas which demand further development. The most notable of these, as anticipated, was the design of the system heat exchange. Future concepts will seek to maximize heat transfer from the combustion source, minimize thermal resistance within the heat sink-thermoelectric assembly, and maximize heat transfer on the cold side with a minimal cost to weight and net power. As an initial reference point, the constructed TEPU provides a starting point from which improvements can be evaluated. It was not the intention or expectation of this current device to meet the needs of portable power applications, rather, to serve as a tool for the development of thermoelectric device technologies which will be ready to realize the maximum potential of advancing thermoelectric materials technologies.
