The first flight of the unmanned demonstrator Barracuda on April 2nd 2006 represents a major milestone in the development of unmanned aerial vehicles in Europe. The Barracuda was developed by EADS Military Air Systems (MAS) in order to test key technologies for unmanned military flight operations. Certification was performed according to 'Kategorie 2' of the German LTF 1550 but strictly obeying the restrictions according to 'Kategorie 1'. Barracuda shall be flown only in restricted air-space over unpopulated areas. The following paper describes the development of the flight control system for the Barracuda. Presented are the approach and the techniques as well as the specialties which arose during the course of this demonstrator program. System design and software development were understood as a tightly coupled and this approach contributed to a great extend to the success of the project.
