Increasing automobile safety requirements have resulted in the demand for sheet steels with tensile strength above 1000-1200 MPa having sufficient formability. In recent years new metallugrical routes have been developed such as TRIP dual and Q&P (quenching and partitioning). TRIP dual is produced by the direct isothermal holding in bainite or martensite regions from fully austenitized condition. Q&P utilizes isothermal holding at low temperature after partial martensite transformation. Both TRIP dual and Q&P processes have similar microstructures of retained austenite in the martensitic/bainitic matrix. However, there is a lack of systematic comparison of microstructure and mechanical properties between these two processes. This study presents microstructural features as well as the balance of tensile properties (elongation and yield ratio), stretch flangeability and bendability of TRIP dual and Q&P steels in comparison with conventional AHSS (advanced high strength steel) sheets such as TRIP and DP (dual phase) steels of the same strength.
