For off-shore wind energy plants (OWEP), inspection, maintenance and repair are much more difficult and more expensive compared to on-shore plants. Therefore, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has large potential in this field of application. For purposes of monitoring and especially for forecast of the remaining life-time it is important to know the external loads which act on a structural system. The knowledge of these loads enables to make a better design of the structure and an assessment of damage after extreme events. For the wind energy plants (WEP) it is not possible to measure the forces e.g. resulting from wind or wave loads directly. Therefore, these forces are determined indirectly from dynamic measurements with an observer-based concept. Indirectly here means that the structural vibrations of the tower or blades are used to determine the forces that caused this motion. In this contribution, a new method of simultaneous state and input estimation for a class of nonlinear systems, which is used in the area of control engineering, is adapted to online indirect force measurement. A major difference to previous force identification techniques is the online reconstruction of the input forces/moments based on the robust observer principle. The load reconstruction is illustrated on the example of a laboratory structure with tripod foundation. The observer is designed on the basis of a finite element model. The load identification was done with the help of strain and acceleration transducers which were used as input signals for the calculated observer. The estimation quality was verified by usage of the force transducer showed that the random forces from wind load measured by the force-sensor and those obtained by the observer are in very good agreement. Furthermore the measurement data from real WEP M5000-2 which was obtained within the IMO-Wind project were also used for wind load estimation.
