A brief description of the insulation system for electric traction motors of heat-resistance class H (180 deg C) is given. This system is based on modern electric insulating materials, i.e. Elmikaterm 529029 mica tape and ELKOM PK-21 impregnating compound. Elmikaterm 529029 tape represents a compound consisting of mica paper, glass fabric, and polyimide film glued together and impregnated by a compound of heat-resistance class H (180 deg C). ELKOM PK-21 compound represents a low-viscosity homogeneous mixture of epoxy dian resins and carboxylic anhydride. The compound is manufactured in three modifications; it is the basic variant and is applied in combination with mica tapes containing accelerant. The new insulation system was tested at JSC VEINII (Novocherkassk); at present the only certified testing center of traction electric equipment in Russia and CIS states. The tested samples were manufactured in the form of motor carts containing models of the slot part of the rotor core and the winding of the traction motor NB-520V with complete versions of insulation systems. The insulation systems were subject to accelerated thermal and electric aging, which, taking into account the comparative character of testing, were performed for the same values of temperature and electric field strength in the volume equivalent to 20000 h (basic resource) of the operation of insulation systems at a temperature corresponding to heat-resistance class H (180 deg C) and a calculated working voltage of 1 kV. The temperature of 230 deg C and duration of 960 h are chosen according to GOST 10518-88. The testing voltage was 1.5 kV, 50 Hz, for a duration of 80 h. The studied insulation systems were periodically tested with respect to the influence of the change in the temperature of the medium (thermal shocks), which simulate, for example, the launching of traction electric motors at negative temperatures. The basic functional factor of insulation systems, the electric strength, was determined in the initial state and periodically after corresponding volumes of aging loads. The residual electric strengths of the insulation of two variants with respect to the values in the initial state were 80 % and 90 %.
