This study showed the potential of using nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) coating under sever conditions. Unlike other diamond materials, NCD-film offers a combination of low friction and high wear resistance even under severe boundary-lubrication condition. It has to be stated that the material of counter acting body may critically affect the wear conditions. It shows the mean value of the wear for one body shape (ball) with different materials. All trails are run with a Load of 50 N. Conclusions can be summarized as follow: - NCD-coating on ceramic shows definitely advantages at high specific pressure (>1000 MPa) by building wear - Friction values remain under 0,15 as long as no delamination occurs - In case of coating of the two bodies the height of specific pressure plays a subordinated effect on the friction number (with the SRV test) - (Contact) geometry of the bodies, uniformity of the layer as well as the surface topography are substantial. - The existing roughness points (Asperities) Rp/Rz = 0.85 favors the layer damage at high pressing during the SRV attempts - The composition of the lubricant in combination with NCD layer plays a subordinated role; no significant differences in friction number with differently additivated lubricants. - Nanocrystalline diamond film is a potential coating for advanced automotive engine application considering proper preparation of substrate. By using NCD-coated material the quality of used lubricant can be neglected. In other words, low coefficient of friction and high wear resistance can be achieved by using lubricant with lower to no additive content. Reduction of cost and use of cheap chemicals in a system is the positive consequences. The combination of NCD-coated material and low treated lubricant may lead to long term environmentally advantages.
