The industrial safety standard IEC-61508 recommends guidelines like MISRA rules for the development of safety-critical systems. These rules help to avoid potential typical programming errors. The new MISRA C++:2008 standard gives a guideline for the safe implementation process in C++ and helps to reduce up to 15 % of errors that are introduced in design and coding. Therefore, MISRA C++ provides an essential part of a safety case but is not enough for safety-related and safety-critical systems since random faults may occur. These faults are detectable by redundancy or by means of specific coding methods. The paper starts with an overview of the new MISRA standard for C++ 2008. The corresponding rules are extended with specific coding rules based on the safely Embedded Software approach that is inspired by the well-known Vital Coded Processor. There the transformation of variables constitutes an AN+B-code with prime factor A and offset B, where B contains a static signature for each variable and a dynamic signature for each program cycle. Operations and control structures are transformed accordingly. In contrast to other approaches, the Safely Embedded Software approach constitutes safety in the application software layer by means of the C++ programming language. Both the application of MISRA C++ and the adaptation of Safely Embedded Software approach will contribute to the realization of safety-critical systems by object-oriented programming languages like C++.
