Abrasive waterjet (AWJ) can virtually cut any material, leaving a sand-blasted like surface, free of thermal distortion. However, the poor quality striated surfaces obtained at the jet exit side, require post processing operations. Therefore, proper selection of cutting parameters is necessary for obtaining good quality AWJ cutting. In the present work, a standard L27(313) orthogonal array based on Taguchi design of experiments is used for AWJC (Abrasive Water Jet Cutting) of glass-epoxy composites. The experimental results and ANOVA indicate that quality level has the most significant influence on surface roughness. A small amount of ply delamination is also observed on the jet exit side. Based on the above experimental results and analysis, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. Water jet pressure and quality level are the most significant factors affecting surface roughness with small contribution of their interaction effect. Abrasive flow rate has the least effect on surface roughness among the three process parameters. 2. It is observed that higher level of water jet pressure and quality level and lower level of abrasive flow rate are desirable for minimum surface roughness. 3. The developed mathematical model successfully predicted the surface roughness of AWJ cut glass-epoxy composite within the range of cutting parameters and can be used for the determination of optimal cutting parameters for producing a better cut surface quality. 4. Ply delamination is observed on the jet exit side, which could be minimized with the proper selection of AWJ cutting parameters. Further studies are going on to establish and quantify delamination.
