As happens to the great majority of solid surfaces immersed in sea water, after a relatively short immersion time ship hulls become fouled with numerous marine organisms. Environmental concerns lead to develop new antifouling paints, respectful to the environment and efficient over a long term period. A new way is to elaborate some core-shell nanoparticles as binder in an aqueous media and thus managing their erosion properties. The synthesis of the core-shell particles was done by swelling of a seed latex obtained by miniemulsion polymerization with (meth)acrylate monomers. Latexes have been investigated as binders for self-polishing antifouling paints. To match the polishing properties of tin-based coatings, terpolymers and core-shell binders have been synthesized via a miniemulsion process. Core-shell binders have an hydrophobic core and copolymers with MAA monomer units in the shell. Their behavior upon immersion in water or sea water have been assessed from water uptake measurements and polishing properties under dynamic conditions. The influence of parameters including the hydrophobic/hydrophilic character of the binder, its molecular weight, and its morphology is discussed. Polishing rate and thickness decrease of the coatings were evaluated with a rotating drum and compared to an organotin reference and give promising results. The presence of hydrophilic polymers in the shell strongly affects the water uptake of the coating thus modifying its polishing. Parameters including the binder composition, its molecular weight, and its morphology were shown to affect the film forming, the water uptake and the polishing properties of the resulting coating.
