The development of SpaceWire as a solution for the implementation of on-board high speed serial links and networks corresponds to a long haul strategy for ESA. Starting from architectural considerations and previous milestones related to standardisation undertakings in the frame of ECSS (European Cooperation for Space Standardization), the paper presents the current development status of components, building blocks and tools supported by ESA in order to fully exploit the potential of the SpaceWire technology. More emphasis is then dedicated to the mapping of communication services onto SpaceWire networks in order to enable a large spectrum of applications requiring high speed data transfers in combination with the transfer of command and control packets. Finally some open issues are presented together with planned evolutions of the standard.
